• Embryonic development in humans begins after conception and formation of zygote. The developing organism from conception until approximately the end of 8 weeks (second month) is called embryo.
• Mammalian egg contains negligible yolk so that the survival of such embryo is made possible by the fact that they are nourished through placenta. Placenta acts as a barrier as well as ultrafilter between foetus and mother. It is connected to foetus by a rope-like umbilical cord which helps in the transport of substances to and from the embryo.
• The yolk's primary function is to provide nutrition for the development of the embryo. As in higher organisms, there's a structure called placenta, yolk may be present in a small amount or not at all.
