❶ The experiment is based on Respiration by germinating seeds. It is a catabolic process in which glucose is broken down and oxidised to release CO2 and some amount of energy in the form of ATP.

i) a is a test tube containing potassium hydroxide (KOH) which is used for absorbing carbon dioxide which will be released after respiration. And, b is containing water(H2O).

ii) a is containing potassium hydroxide (KOH) which is used for absorbing carbon dioxide. This will create a vacuum and cause the water to rise upwards.

In the Test tube:

iii) When Carbon dioxide will be absorbed by Potassium hydroxide, a vacuum is created in the flask. This causes the water to rise upwards and some of these water will be seen in the delivery tube(rising upwards).

iv) The aim of the experiment is to show that Carbon dioxide is released during the respiration. This is one of the experiment, the other one is Lime water experiment. Here, Potassium hydroxide was used which absorbs the Carbon dioxide and creates a vacuum.

❷ At night, There is no sunlight and hence photosynthesis doesn't takes place. Only respiration will take place. Oxygen will diffuse into the stomata and Carbon dioxide is released out. So,

  • X = Carbon dioxide (Arrow moving out)
