Answer:

Ziauddin Barani was a 14th century chronicler. He was a Muslim political thinker and historian during the period of Delhi Sultanate under Muhammad Bin Tughlaq and Firoz Shah’s reign. His best known work is Tarikh-i-Firoz Shahi which is written about the period of rule of Ghiyas ud din Balban and the first six years of Firoz Shah. Another of his work is Fatawa-i-Jahandari which is an account of the hierarchies of the Muslim communities in India.

Fatawa-i-Jahandari discusses the political ideals that a Muslim ruler should follow. It lays down the instructions as to how Muslim ruler must earn religious merit and the appreciation of his subjects. The book states down the advice and is often compared to Kutiliya’s Arthashahstra and Machiavelli’s Prince. This book was an exemplary work of Ziauddin Barani who was against the separation of the upper class ‘Ashraf’ Muslims and lower class ‘Ajlaf’ Muslims.

The Tarikh-i-Firoz Shahi was his work on the interpretation of the reign of Delhi Sultanate till Firoz Shah Tughlaq. Those accounts said that those who followed Barani’s advice succeeded while those who did not, failed.

Note: Ziauddin Barani is considered to be a very unfair and unreliable source in history. He did not consult his contemporaries. He also criticised Muhammad Tughlaq because he felt that the Sultan had lost his ability of his judgement.
