CORROSION - it's a irreversible change where the metals are corroded. means it converts the metal to it's chemically stable form. it's due to chemical reactions and these reactions basically take place in the presence of air or water. and sometimes metals corrode because of acids and bases.

corrosion of iron - it's also known as rusting. we know about rusting of iron. in this, iron reacts with oxygen to form iron oxide and a weaker compound is formed that we call the rust. it's reddish type.

chemical equation - 4Fe + 3O2 + 2H2O --> 2Fe2O3H2O

corrosion of copper - in case of copper, copper reacts with atmospheric gases like carbondioxide and oxygen and a green color compound is formed of copper hydroxide and copper carbonate.

chemical equation - 2Cu + H2O + Co2 + O2 --> Cu(OH)2 + CuCo3

corrosion of silver - silver don't react much as compared to iron and copper. it get tarnished when it gets in contact to atmosphere and reacts with hydrogen sulphide and sulphur. tarnishing like something greyish and blackish type dull coating.

chemical equation - 4Ag + 2H2S + O2 --> 2Ag2S + 2H2O

ways to prevent corrosion are as follows :-

⏺painting will help to prevent corrosion.

⏺ electroplating is a simple process of coating a thin layer of a metal. on the metal which you don't want to get corroded. like you can deposit a thin layer of zinc on iron.

⏺by allowing. in this process, two or more metals are combined to change the properties of pure metal and hence it protects from rusting. as a strong and stainless steel is formed.
