Answer:
cos (x+y) = cos x cos y - sin x sin y
cos (x-y) = cos x cos y + sin x sin y
In general:
(a-b)² - (a+b)² = ( a² + b² - 2ab ) - ( a² + 2ab + b² ) = -4ab
So...
cos²(x+y) - cos²(x-y) = -4 cos x cos y sin x sin y
= - ( 2 cos x sin x ) ( 2 cos y sin y )
= - sin 2x sin 2y
Therefore
cos 2x cos 2y + cos²(x+y) - cos²(x-y)
= cos 2x cos 2y - sin 2x sin 2y
= cos (2x+2y)
