Here,

Cos(x+y) = Cos(x).Cos(y) - Sin(x).Sin(y) ............(1)

Cos(x-y)= Cos(x).Cos(y) + Sin(x).Sin(y) ............(2)

Adding (1) & (2),

Cos(x+y) + Cos(x-y)= [Cos(x).Cos(y) - Sin(x).Sin(y)] + [Cos(x).Cos(y) + Sin(x).Sin(y)]

Cos(x+y) + Cos(x-y)= Cos(x).Cos(y) - Sin(x).Sin(y) + Cos(x).Cos(y) - Sin(x).Sin(y)

Cos(x+y) + Cos(x-y)= 2Cos(x).Cos(y).
