Despite popular belief, they were not at all productive. They have always been physically weak and no matter how hard being pushed, they cannot produce good results. This is why there came a need for machines to do the real work. Really, slavery was a bad thing because the presence of blacks has made life worse for everyone. Slavery was also a form of welfare. Who needs an entire race of people without the ability to become economically stable on their own? America was doing no good service to slaves. Slaves were doing no good service to America. America could have gone along just fine without them, and would have been a cleaner, safer, greatly productive nation without slavery and its consequences.
