Given:

  • Cost of 4 dozen bananas = Rs. 180

To find:

→ Number of bananas that can be purchased for Rs. 90

Solution:

According to the question,

We know that:

1 dozen = 12 bananas

4 dozen bananas = 4 × 12 = 48 bananas.

Now,

48 bananas = Rs. 180

x bananas = Rs. 90

Taking proportion,

48 : 180 :: x : 90

Product of means = Product of extremes

⇒ 180(x) = 90 × 48

180x = 90 × 48

180x = 4320

x = 4320 ÷ 180

∴ x = 24 bananas

So, 24 bananas can be purchased for Rs. 90

Know more:

  • This question can be solved by unitary method also i.e by dividing and finding out the cost of 1 banana and then multiplying to find out how many bananas can be purchased for Rs 90.
  • This method would not give us the exact answer. So we took proportion.

Unitary method:-

  • The unitary method is a method in which you find the value of a unit and then the value of a required number of units.

 \\

For example:-

  • 20 Bananas ⇢ Rs 100

  • 1 Banana ⇢ Rs 100/ 20

  • 5 Bananas ⇢ 50 × 5
