cost of 8 pens and 4 pencils is Rs. 176.00 and the cost of 2 pens and 2 pencils is Rs . 48. What is the cost of one pen???

cost of pencil = y

8x + 4y = 176 eq1
2x + 2y = 48 eq2

multiply eq2 by 2 and subtract from eq1

8x + 4y = 176
-4x - 4y = -96

4x = 80

x = 20

Put values of x in eq1

8×20 + 4y = 176

160 + 4y = 176

4y = 16

y = 4

Cost of one pen is 20Rs and one pencil is 4Rs
