Cotton clothes sometimes shrink when washed. Give reason

Cotton does not actually shrink in water.Cotton fibres have a tendency of expanding when they were wet and shrinking when they were dry.
When we will put a cotton lump in water,it will immediately shrink as air present between fibres will try to escape out into water.Cotton fibres shrink when they come contact with warm water.
