cotton is solid but it has many pores due to air is filled in it which makes it's density less than that of water so it floats

cotton has a porous structure, the are gets trapped between the pores making overall density of the cotton less then the water hence the cotton floats on the water. ... when the water replaces the air the pores the density increases and the cotton sinks
