Cotton wool is light and fluffy but when some water is dropped in it, it shrinks. Explain

it is fluffy while dry because of the air gaps .these air gaps contain air but when its wet the air tries to escape and water takes its space .so,now the air gaps are not there anymore.because they are not there its looks as if it has shrinked.
