could displacement be negative? why or why not

ASIMOV: suppose you are at origin and you walked 5 meters towards right. Now you turn back and walk towards origin. The distance covered now is 5 meters but displacement is -5 meters because displacement is a vector quantity. Now you continue walking in the same direction(towards left) -3 meters. Therefore your total displacement will be +5 - 5 -3 = -3 which is negative
