This chapter is written by William Sydney Porter (known as O. Henry). This chapter is about a family—the Bramble family—who want to hide from their son Harold that his father is a professional boxer.
Mr. Bill Bramble was an expert boxer. No boxer in London weighing 8 stone 4 (stone is a unit of weight commonly used in UK) could defeat him, yet he was the mildest and most obliging of men. He an intelligent son Harold who was very much different from their parents. Although he was interested in boxing, he was excellent in his studies and had won many awards, certificate and medals. His parents thought that telling him his father's profession would bring him shame.
Finally, Mr. Bramble decided that he would retire after his fight with American Murphy. The winner was to get 500 pounds and the loser was to get 120 pounds. It was a big amount and they could give Harold the best education with it. But then Mr. Bramble gave up this idea because he knew that his photo would come in the newspapers next and Harold will see it as he read newspaper daily. This would mean that his father's profession would no longer be a secret for Harold. Then Mr. Jerry Fisher, Bill's coach, pleaded Bill to change his decision. But he did not listen. So to take revenge, he told Harold about his father's profession. But Harold reacted very mildly and Bill made his last fight with the Murphy.
