Answer:

In today's education system we are constantly reminded of the importance of empathy and caring for other people. But why? Is it really so important to be compassionate towards another being, even if it may cost us our convenience?

A younger me would reason that all human beings should be treated equally. If I can exude compassion towards an elderly or anyone, then I should do so to the rest of humanity. Ultimately, it was guided by the need to end world suffering. But experiences bring new light to our eyes. What is the point of doing anything if we cannot find good reason to?

Don't we all envision life where people on this planet live harmoniously together, without need for distrust, poverty, suffering, violence, war? For that to happen, we need to act on our own initiative because we are the people. Explaining the need for compassion is akin to trying to prove the existence of a god. For us and all the material world to exist, there must have been a compassionate, more powerful being to do so, because nothing in existence has been able to do that. Similarly, if we want compassion in this world, it needs to start somewhere, from someone who can show compassion.
