Should English be made an optional subject in schools?

Good morning everyone; I am going to debate on ‘Should English be made an optional subject in schools? And I am going to speak against it.

English no longer is a foreign language; it has become the world language. It is the lingua franca of the world. It should continue to be the compulsory subject. All the communication, interaction, advertisements, etc. are predominantly in English language. All the MNCs use English as their official language; if one has to work at one of the MNCs, one must know English. Not knowing English means missing the chance to avail all the facilities provided in the modern world and on internet.

Apart from the above mentioned reasons there are many other reasons also. English is the language of the new emerging world. It is the most popular international language in the world. English is the language of diplomacy, business, science, technology, banking, computing, medicine, aviation, engineering, tourism, UN & NATO armed forces, Hollywood films and the best pop and rock music of the world. All the higher education is imparted in English only. During job selection your fluency in English plays a key role in your selection. If you are travelling to any other country in the world for business or leisure, English may prove quite helpful as it is spoken in all the advanced countries of the world. Even in India, it is the official language. So, for the above mentioned reasons everyone must learn English.

I conclude my speech by reaffirming that English subject should remain compulsory at schools and colleges.

Counterviews:

English as an subject must not be optional as it has become the lingua franca of the world. Of course, India has various languages as mother tongues but the use of English language is necessary. Therefore, it should be taught and learned properly.

According to BBC, India is now considered the second country that has the largest amount of English-speaking natives. But there are certains schools in towns, villages and even in big cities that do not put effort in teaching this language.

In all sphere of life, English has become the mandetory medium of communication. An educated person needs to know and speak this language.

Although we must be fluent in English, we, as Indians, should not forget our mother tongues and the nationa language, Hindi. So, English should be mandetory from preliminary classes in schools.
