Life is a series of challenges and obstacles. Most challenges are light and the process of resolving them is exciting and fun. Some challenges are difficult and often seem too much for us to handle, mostly because we may be young and just beginning to learn that life is not easy. But, these challenges with the obstacles that are part of the challenge are the ones that we learn from as we are forced to be creative in trying to resolve them. My father used to say that the most exciting part of life is the challenges. The first few may seem too much but in time we acquire a facility in facing them and developing the techniques to work them out successfully. Good times in life are enjoyable and fun, but it is the challenges that make us grow, and in the process of growing, learn about life, about people, about friends, about enemies, about our loved ones and most of all, about ourselves.

People who avoid challenges lose all those chances to grow and end up being immature and like children, undependable. They may be fun to be with, but in time people realize that they have little to offer that is helpful to anyone, except for whatever work skills they may have. But, when difficult times come, they have little experience in understanding what to do. The people who get ahead in life are the ones who have difficult times, face them with determination and work them out to their satisfaction and are the better for it. The more obstacles we face in life, the more we not learn not only about life, but about how to approach and conquer even greater obstacles. Not only are they strong and able to better their own lives, but they are leaders and good employers and are in position to help others to better their lives. Parents who have the courage to face challenges and the obstacles that go along with them, are a blessing to their children because they can train them when they are young not to give up when they encounter a problem, but to face it and figure out ways to work it out and overcome the challenge. This is a great benefit for the children when they get older.

People who have become strong may also face personal weaknesses and this is probably their greatest challenge. When they fail to conquer their weakness like addiction to drugs or alcohol, they will take responsibility for their failure and make a determined effort to beat the addiction with God’s help. Those who have never grown up will find all kinds of excuses for their failure, and end up wallowing in self-pity and blaming their problem on the excuse that it is a sickness, or that it is others’ fault that they have such a problem Until they learn that the problem is their problem and take responsibility for their problem they will never grow up or overcome the addiction, and in the process damage and destroy the lives of those they say they love. Love like that is so weak, it is difficult to even call it love, because real love is strong and drives a person to make great personal sacrifices to show that love and to protect those they love. Friends and family get sick after a while with people who wallow in self-pity and cowardly blame their problems on other people. They have to grow up and be the man or woman they should be. And when they make the effort and humbly ask God for the help they need, God never fails them.
