Given :

The cost price for 6 melons = $ 5

The selling price for 3 melons = $ 4

The profit amount made = $ 84

To Find :

The number of melons sold

Solution :

Let The number of melons bought = number of melons sold = n melons

According to question

∵  The cost price for 6 melons = $ 5

∴  The cost price for 1 melon = $ \dfrac{5}{6}

Or, The cost price for n melons = $ \dfrac{5}{6} × n

Again

∵  The selling price for 3 melons = $ 4

∴  The selling price for 1 melon = $ \dfrac{4}{3}

Or, The selling price for n melons = $ \dfrac{4}{3} × n

Now,

 Profit = Selling Price - Cost price

Or, $ 84 =  $ \dfrac{4}{3} × n -  $ \dfrac{5}{6} × n

Or,    \dfrac{8-5}{6} × n = 84

Or,  \dfrac{3}{6} × n = 84

∴          n = \dfrac{84\times 6}{3}

              = 168

Hence, The Total number of melons are 168  Answer
