The common oxidation state of any element is its group number or (group number)-8.

So the common oxidation state of chlorine(group number=7) is 7-8 =-1.

Oxidation state of o is -2.

Oxidation state of H is +1.

In H2o, oxidation state of H and o are balanced.given that total oxidation state is +2.

Sum of all oxidation states is +2, let oxidation state of Al be x.

x+(-1)+5(0)=+2.x=2+1. x=+3. of Al be x. x+(-1)+5(0)=+2.x=2+1. x=+3.

Explanation:

Oxidation state of aluminium is + 3 since

Let Oxidation state of aluminium be x

and the valency of chlorine = -1 and H2O = 0

Therefore according to the condition,

x+(-1)+0*5=+2

Solving this we get,

x=+3

Then, covalency of Al=6

Since it makes 6 covalent bonds

i.e. Al at center and 5 bonds with H2O and 1 bond with Cl-

Hence Al has +3 oxidation state

Covalency =6
