Ionic bond is just an Electrostatic attraction (force) between oppositely charged ions which are in spherical shape & the strength of that force depends on inverse of the distance between them.

The direction of ions approaching towards each other does not affect nature and strength of that bond. That's why ionic bonds are Non-Directional in nature.

As against this covalent bond is first of all formed by overlapping of orbitals of different atoms and the Strength of Covalent bond depends upon the extent of overlapping between them. Thus for effective overlapping, the partner atoms must approach each other in a Particular direction as there is standard orientation of atomic orbitals of different atoms.
