The meaning of covalent bonds being directional is that atoms bonded covalently prefer specific orientations in space relative to one another. As a result, molecules in which atoms are bonded covalently have definite shapes. ... Hence covalent bondsshow directionality because of the shape of their electron wavefunction.

A covalent bond is formed by the overlap of half- filled atomic orbitals which have definite direc-tions. Hence covalent bond is directional. In ionic compounds, each ion is surrounded by a number of oppositely charged ions and hence there is no definite direction.
