COVID-19 virus can spread when an infected person coughs or sneezes and releases these

droplets into the air, where they are either inhaled by others, or can land on other people’s mouths or

noses if they’re near enough- generally a distance of about six feet (1.8 meters). Once the virus finds

itself inside a new human host, it can start infecting cells and cause disease.

Since the disease spreads via respiratory droplets, neither a handshake or fist bump would be a

primary way to pass along the virus. An infected person would have to sneeze or cough into his hand,

touch someone else’s hand, and that second person would then have to place that hand in close contact

with their nose, mouth or even eyes to get infected with any virus that might still be on the hand’s

surface. Throughout any given workday, employees use their hands to write up a report, shake hands with

a new client, open doors and much more. All of these activities expose hands to harmful germs and

bacteria.

According to the World Health Organization (WHO), hand sanitizer is one of the best tools

available to avoid spreading virus. Hand sanitizer is a liquid, gel, or foam which is generally used to

decrease infectious agents on the hands. Hand sanitizer is the homogeneous mixture of isopropyl alcohol, ethanol (ethyl alcohol), or n-propanol. Hand sanitizer that contains at least 60% alcohol should

be used. The molecular formula of ethyl alcohol is CH3CH2OH

Answer the following questions, based on the above paragraph,

1. When using an alcohol-based hand sanitizer, which one of the following should not be followed?

(01 mark)

(a) Apply product to the palm of one hand.

(b) Rub hands together.

(c) Rub the product over all surfaces of hands and fingers until hands are dry.

(d) Going near to gas burner or any burning object during or after applying hand sanitizer.

2. The number of molecules of ethanol present in 92 g of ethanol is (01 mark)

(a) 6.022 x 1023

(b) 12.044 x 1023

(c) 18.066 x 1023

(d) 24.088 x 1023

Answer:

1). The alcohol-based hand sanitizers do not remove dirt and are less effective in killing the virus and bacteria if the hands are soiled. If you need to clean the dirt, use soap and water. For example, after gardening, sports, playing outside, you must avoid using hand sanitizer

2). The number of molecules of ethanol present in 92 g of ethanol is (a) 6.022 x 1023
