Concept:

  • Root mean square velocity
  • Specific heat at constant volume
  • Specific heat at constant pressure
  • The amount of heat needed to raise a substance's temperature by one degree Celsius per gramme is known as its specific heat.

Given:

  • Specific heat at constant pressure Cp = 6.97 cal/mol/°c
  • Specific heat at constant volume Cv = 4.98 cal/mol/°c
  • Temperature = 27 °C = 300 K

Find:

  • The RMS velocity of the oxygen molecules

Solution:

R = Cp - Cv = 6.97- 4.98 = 1.99 cal/mol/k = 8.314 J/K mol

Vrms = √3RT/M

R = 8.314 J/K mol

T = 300 K

M = 32 g = 0.032 kg

Vrms = √3*8.314*300/0.032 = 483 m/s

The RMS velocity of the molecules is 483 m/s.
