Hey there !

Solution:

Chromium has an electronic configuration of 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ 4s² 3d⁵

Zinc has an electronic configuration of 1s² 2s² 2p⁶ 3s² 3p⁶ 4s² 3d¹⁰

From the above electronic configuration we can say some properties which differentiate them:

  • Chromium has partially filled 'd' orbital while Zinc ha completely filled 'd' orbital.
  • Chromium requires less Ionization energy than Zinc.

The reason is that, Chromium has partially filled 'd' orbitals while Zinc has completely filled 'd' orbital.

This implies that Zinc is more stable than Chromium. We know that a stable configuration has high amount of attractive force between them. Due to this they cannot be removed easily. Hence stable configurations have higher Ionization enthalpy.

On the other hand partially filled configuration have less ionization enthalpy as they require less energy to make them stable. Hence they have lesser Ionization enthalpy.

Hence we can say that, Chromium has lesser ionization enthalpy than Zinc.

Hope my answer helped !
