A food chain is created below:

Grass \rightarrow Grasshopper \rightarrow Rat \rightarrow Owl \rightarrow Microorganisms

Lets us first understand briefly what is a food chain and then discuss the different trophic levels of the food chain considering the given example.

What is a food chain?

The food chain shows a series of organisms arranges linearly showing their dependency on the other organisms with respect to energy.

Trophic levels in a food chain:

  1. Grass absorbed energy from the sun and carries out photosynthesis to synthesise its own food. Thus, it is 'producer'.
  2. Grasshopper feeds on this grass and obtain energy stored in the grass. Thus, it can be considered as a primary consumer.
  3. Rat feeds on the grasshopper. Thus, it is a secondary consumer in the given food chain.
  4. Owl feeds on the rats as well as the grasshopper and other insects too. Hence, it is tertiary consumer occupying the top of the food chain.
  5. Microorganisms like fungi can decompose the dead bodies of the owl and other organisms after their death. Thus, they fall under the category of decomposers.

The above food chain is GFC food chain, i.e. Grazing Food Chain.
