  • The Maratha were a Marathi-speaking soldiers and warriors hailing from the western Deccan Plateau  which is the present-day Maharashtra.
  • They rose to prominence by establishing a self-rule of Indian people. The Marathas became prominent in the 17th century under the leadership of Shivaji Maharaj, who revolted against the Adil Shahi dynasty.
  • Marathas are hailed and praised fro their courage who battled the fierce mughal soldiers and reversed the situation by bringing the long mughal rule to a fall.
  • After the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb’s death , Maratha power revived under Shivaji’s grandson Shahu. He directed kingly powers to the Brahman Bhat family, who became hereditary Peshwas  which means chief ministers.
  • Pilaji Rao Gaekwad conquered the city from the Mughal Empire. The Scindia family was the Maratha ruling family of Gwalior, which for a time in the 18th century dominated the politics of northern India.
  • Gaekwads established themselves in Baroda , the Holkars at Indore, the Shindes (or Scindias) at Gwalior, and the Bhonsales at Nagpur. These are the Marathan clans which chased mughals away from India.
