- After the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb’s death , Maratha power revived under Shivaji’s grandson Shahu. He directed kingly powers to the Brahman Bhat family, who became hereditary Peshwas which means chief ministers.
- Pilaji Rao Gaekwad conquered the city from the Mughal Empire. The Scindia family was the Maratha ruling family of Gwalior, which for a time in the 18th century dominated the politics of northern India.
- Gaekwads established themselves in Baroda , the Holkars at Indore, the Shindes (or Scindias) at Gwalior, and the Bhonsales at Nagpur. These are the Marathan clans which chased mughals away from India.
