Create an activity to prove that compounds like ethanol and glucose are not
categorised as acids even though their structural formula shows the presence of
hydrogen. Give scientific reason for the observations.

The activity to identify presence of hydrogen ions:

  • Take a beaker and place a cork at the bottom of the beaker.
  • The cork is fitted with two nails where the nails are connected to switch and bulb.
  • First the beaker is filled with dilute hydrochloric acids and the bulb glows when the switch is in ON state.
  • The hydrochloric acid is removed from the beaker.
  • Second the beaker is filled with ethanol or glucose and the bulb does not glow when the switch is in ON state.

Conclusion:

Now, we can understand that all the acids are dissociated into H⁺ ions where not all the compounds containing hydrogen ions are dissociated into H⁺ ions.
