Explanation:

say most people would point out India and Pakistan. In recent years, because of the IPL, cricket has become huge over in that part of the world. This has probably been boosted by India first winning the WC in 83 and Pakistan in 92. Biggest growth in the game overall is in the Asian region. Particularly in Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, Nepal etc.

Traditionally, the biggest cricket rivally I grew up following was the Ashes. Growing up, Australia was the big guns of cricket and the team you wanted to beat. As in any Trans-Tasman rivalry, ODI cricket raised the profile of cricket here in NZ which is our national summer time sport. It is very popular here and our team plays quite well considering our size and resources. In my day, and even now, Australia was the team you wanted to beat along with South Africa. I guess for the same reasons why India likes playing Pakistan, because they are competitive neighbours.

From my experience, the whole India cricket thing has been a relatively recent phenomenon. In fact, when I was younger, the only other team we were more awestruck by were the West Indies. They were like the Andre Agassi of cricket and we loved their exciting style of play.
