NEW DELHI — A report this week ranking India as the most dangerous country in the world for women has reignited the country's ongoing debate over women’s safety.

On Tuesday, the Thomson Reuters Foundation — the philanthropic arm of Reuters media company — released a study that ranked India as the most dangerous place because of its high incidences of sexual violence, lack of access to justice in rape cases, child marriage, female feticide and human trafficking. India outranked such countries as Syria and Afghanistan — second and third — that are currently at war.

Experts interviewed for the poll said India had topped the list because its government has done little to protect women since the controversial rape and murder of a young student in 2012 prompted widespread outrage and changes in the country’s rape laws.

“India has shown utter disregard and disrespect for women ... rape, marital rapes, sexual assault and harassment, female infanticide has gone unabated,” Manjunath Gangadhara, an official in the southern state of Karnataka, told Thomson Reuters.

The poll — based on a survey of 548 experts on women’s issues — ignited an immediate firestorm of controversy on Indian social media, where critics blasted it as based on opinion, not facts.

India's National Commission for Women chairperson, Rekha Sharma, rejected the ranking, saying the sample size was too small, according to the Times of India

Answer:

Crime Against Women In Our Society

The increase in crime against women is going unnoticed. There is no proper data and information on crimes against women are conflicting. There are numerous cases where reporting a crime against women are shrugged off. In some cases the unfortunate victims are compelled to go through more traumatic experience at the hand of those who are supposed to be the protectors. The fear of social stigma and the uncertainty of getting justice are the main reasons why most of the crimes against women go unreported.

Studies have also shown that the rise in alcoholism led crimes against women and domestic violences.

Further, these outrages against women have created a poor image of India among foreign countries. Millions of foreign tourists visit India every year and this has directly affected the tourism industry. It is a matter of great shame that when our country is marching towards prosperity and advancement, the barbaric acts against women are on the rise.

Our fundamental duties under Article 51A of the Constitution also include the provision that it shall be the duty of every citizen of India to renounce practices derogatory to the dignity of women. However, crimes against women are increasing. It is appalling to read news reports of how police continue to be insensitive to hapless victims of outraged modesty and their families. It seems even our public places and transport are unsafe for women. Even in the presence of substantial evidences, the criminals are set free on bail. These criminals have absolutely no regards for the law of the land.

Stringent measures need to be taken to curb this and safeguard women. The government, the law enforcement agencies and the general public must unite to put an end to violence against women. The Government must form special police cells with women officers and other police personnel to receive reports about crime against women and take severe actions against the culprits. More women need to be recruited into our police forces.

The Government must also pass and implement more strict laws than the existing ones for the safety of women. There is an urgent need to impart and inculcate moral values to the police. We must streamline the police and prosecuting agencies. Our political leaders, irrespective of their party affiliations should show political will and conviction to deal severely with those guilty of crimes against women. Remember the adage that the greatness of a country is known by the way it treats the womenfolk.
