"Every man looks out for himself, and he has the happiest life who manages to hoodwink himself best of all"
gripped by anxiety, the impoverished yet handsome and intelligent Rodion Raskalnikov has isolated himself from everyone. it is when he dwells into depression, and even begins to show signs of madness. One of the ideas that the author includes in this novel is the feeling of being alienated from society.
Preoccupied with his own contemplations, Rodion becomes conscious of his own fears. the main question he poses to himself is what meaning, if any, his life has. This question is the central one of existentialism. He experiments with the idea that he is beyond the morality of society and can act according to his own desires. after much introspection, he murders an old greedy pawnbreaker- for the betterment of society- and escapes unnoticed. However, he finds it hard to escape from his conscience.
that is what the story is about, where the author deftly delves into the mind of a troubled young man who commits a crime, laying bare his mental anguish and moral dilemmas.
even though violence and criminality dominate much of the plot, Crime and Punishment poses numerous other questions regarding the real meaning of "sanity" and "crime" and "justice", making readers sympathize for the young murderer.
Crime and punishment is an exceptional psychological drama, undoubtedly the finest of its genre. dealing with complex themes such as morality, criminality, justice and judgement; it continues to remain a literary sensation.
"If he has a conscience he will suffer for his mistake. That will be his punishment-as well as the prison”
