The story revolves around Sambu, who is still struggling from the loss of his father.   R K Narayan has used only a few characters to showcase the loneliness in Sambu's life and the agony of his mother.   The story has a dramatic end when Sambu realises that his father is dead and the picture on screen is just an image.   He consoles his mother and resolves to give her company throughout his life.
