Explanation:
The title of the poem shows the strength of nature and will and at the same time signify the forces and changes taking place in the nature the inability to fully understand their purpose.Ted Hughes treats nature in a very different way then the romantic poets. He deals with such aspects of nature that are not on the surface but are mysterious and hidden by the eyes of people. The poem gives the sense of darkness and gloominess. It gives an imagery of the seen when the writer is walking through woods in a chilly and cold weather and the intensity of the cold is shown by the repeated use of the word frost and then he passes by a group of ten horses standing still as rocks making no movements at all and the liveliness s only shown by the action of breathing that gives a feeling of grey gloominess which is changed by the sunrise when the sun rays unfold the beautiful blue sky out the darkness and the sun just erupted out of the clouds giving a very strong and muscular form to nature. The the poet shows that horses start to give little signs of life and start to wake up noticing the change around them. It shows that ho so much happens around us at the same time so much remains still. The poet in the end makes a prayer that he meets this memory again in a lonely place regarding the horses as his memory because they seem to embody a spiritual resilience of which the narrator did not seem capable in the first lines of the poem.
