Hi friend,

1.This story is a symbolic story in which the characters and situation are representative of either optimism or pessimism.

The two friends, Sue and Johnsy represent these qualities. Johnsy becomes pessimistic when she falls ill due to pneumonia and her negative thinking is on the verge of ruining her life.

Sue on the other hand is an optimistic person. She tries her best to wipe off the negativity in her friend's mind and to infuse it with positive thoughts.

Old Behrman too represents optimism. He is past sixty and has never been quite successful with brush. Sill, he does not lose hope and hopes to pant his masterpiece someday.

The doctor, who treats Johnsy, is also an optimistic person, in the sense, he strongly believes in the power of positive thinking.

Hope it helps!
