The poem "people" is actually a beautiful poem which describes the reality of people and talks about the societies behavior .It gives the messages of humanity and tolerance in aesthetic and different way. The poet the actually set his own example to display the message . The poet says that he like to be independent man and don't want to anyone who interfere n my life. He do likes the other but his preference is to keep away from others and don't want to come near to others . He tells that the the people don't want to give others the space and have low intolerance level So there should be  mindset of people to give other the space in this world. This way he gives the deeply humanity messages to the readers

When D.H. Lawrence starts of the poem that “he like people at a distance”, we think that he is not a friendly person but no. He is a friendly person but an introvert.  From the line “if they will only leave me alone” we get to know that he is not left alone because of him being famous.

We also understand that because of people speaking continuously, he feels that there is no room for everyone and if they only leave him alone then he can atleast imagine that there still more space in the world.  By this we understand that his mind is not silent and that he is yearning for that silence.  This yearning is reflecting outside as people speaking continuously
