Walt whitman and American non-confornist poet wrote a Revolutionary kind of poetry. He is poem entitled 'Animals', tells us that he feels morecomfortable with animals that human beings when he finds complicated and false. Thus the title is appropriate and as it a counter around the Animals possesing better qualities.
The poet has deplicted the simplicity of the animals and the greedeness and complex nature of the human beings. He brings out difference between the two expressing cententment on the placid nature of the animals. The carefree nature impresses Walt whitman and he wants to evaluate them;Against the whinning, discontent and the poor behaviour of humans.
Various figures of speech have highlighted the poem like
repetition, alliteration, personification ,hyperbole etc. Hyperbole in the line 'No one is respectable or unhappy over the whole Earth',repetition in the line 'I stand and look at them long and long'. The special features of the poem are it is written in the free verse, in one piece. The language is simple and easy to understand with appropriate words like 'Placid','Demented' are used. The tone and moral is suitable and makes one thank and realise inhuman behaviour. The implied meaning is to change our ways and develop mutual love and understanding for one another. Visual image in is used in the line 'They do not lie awake in the dark and weep for the sins ' it is a simple thought provokaning poem.My favourite lines are 'they bring me broken of myself...'. I like the poem as it is inculcates and teachers me virtues like innocence, simplicity, love, contentment which animals have preserve but humans have destroyed over a period of time.
