In this poem the poet calls the white people of America the Free birds which can enjoy their lives according to their own will. The caged birds refer to the black people which were facing discrimination in that time and were treated as slaves by white people. They had no rights, they had no future, they do not had even the right to speak for basic needs.
The poet very efficiently states the feelings of a caged bird which does not had a chance to go outside his cage, it does not see vastness of the blue skies, and when it feels that it should do something to tell its fear and emotions to his God and pray for its freedom.
The poet very beautifully states the amazing lives of the free people who can enjoy their lives in any sense but the caged birds only can sing and its the only thing they can do to make their voices pass through the skies and to the other free birds.
