A speech delivered by Chief Seattle, “Speech of 1851,” uses imagery to illustrate a vivid vision of a land of 2 million acres sold to the U.S. Government. Similar strategy of imagery is used by Willa Cather in her novel “O’ Pioneers” as she describes the land of the Divide. Both lands differed in beauty. Chief Seattle illustrates his land as a beautiful giving one, while the land in “O’ Pioneers” is described as a wild one. Although Chief Seattle displays his land with more appreciation than Cather does for the Divide, both lands have one thing in common. They are both important to the people who live in them because the lands are reminders of loved ones that have passed away.
