Nationalism grew as a reaction to British policies although some of their policies the growth of such a consciousness. At the mass level the popular uprisings in different parts of the country strengthened national consciousness in their own way. The middle classes gradually developed this consciousness and ultimately channelized it into the national movement.

                   The British were also facing problems in maintaining effective control of the government. To overcome these deficiencies the British evolved some effective measures and policies. These  measures also helped in the development of national consciousness among Indians.

These policies were:

                    1. Unified system of administration

                    2. Communication network

                    3. Printing press

                    4. New education system

                    5. British policy of expansion

                    6. Intellectual awakening

                    7. Racial discrimination
