There are many movements in India against of environmental degradation. Out of these, “The Chipko Movement” has its own importance due to many reasons.

Chipko movement started in 1970, by villagers residing at foothill of Himalia in Uter Perdesh by a man, who ties a sacred thread on trunk of large trees, then hugged them. In addition, by enlightened the importance of trees i.e. prevention of soil erosion or fertile layer of soil, causes rain, provide shadows and fruits etc., that man asked the villagers to stand with him.

Movement faced many problems including a “firing incident on a woman”, when police opened fire and torture to individual female. After that, movement boosted up with more power and intensity. Moreover, all people played there role in movement.
