The Chipko movement was an Indian movement for land protection. The event was initiated in 1970 in Uttarakhand and then was held in Uttar Pradesh (at Himalayan foothills), and went on to become a rallying point for several future ecological movements around the world
Explanation:
- The Chipko campaign set a path for non-violent demonstrations in India and its popularity quickly led to this non-violent campaign being recognised worldwide that had motivated many of the related environmental groups in time to slow down rapid deforestation, expose hidden agendas, increase awareness of the social condition and need to save forests, increase ecological awareness & demonstrate the viability of people power.
- Sunderlal Bahuguna, a noted environmentalist had initiated the movement. By explaining role of trees in controlling soil erosion, induce rain and create clean air, Bahuguna illustrated to the villagers the importance of trees. The women in the Tehri-Garhwal village of Advani tied sacred thread around tree trunks and clinged to the trees, so it was called 'Chipko Movement' or 'Hug Tree Movement.'
- The people's main demand in these protests was for local people to protect the forests (particularly the right to feed). In 1978, when women were faced with police shootings and other torture, the Chipko Movement had gathered momentum.
- The then head of state set up a commission to discuss the matter, eventually deciding in favour of the villagers. This became a turning point in the history of ecodevelopment struggles in the region & globally.
