Answer:

India got independence in 1947 and our government started working from 1951, at that time we were facing so many problems like less productivity to self sufficiency in most fields.

We took the concept of five year plans from USSR and adopted mixed economy where both private as well as state was to flourish together.

First five year plan was adopted in 1951 and it continued till 1956, this plan was based on Harrod-Domar model mainly focussing on the development of the primary sector as this sector comprised major part of population of our country.

Growth rate achieved was 3.6% which was more than the target growth which was 2.1% and with very small economy we were able to establish 5 IIT's and University Grant Commission.

In our first plan we were also able to establish various infrastructure projects which included various dams and big manufacturing units.

Although, when we compare our first five year plan it was not a huge success compared to other successive plans but one should also remember that it was a small seed sown by our then Prime Minister Jawahar Lal Nehru for the development of our country.
