Answer:
The song is a prayer to transcend the earthly soul through a wholehearted surrender to God. Tagore prays that God will strike at the root of "penury" in his heart. ... He prays for strength to bear the joys and sorrows of life equally and for the strength to manifest his love for God in fruitful service.

In this poem the poet prays to the Almighty to give him strength so that he can work for the welfare of others and for his own spiritual improvement. In the very first stanza Tagore has prayed to God to strike at and remove spiritual penury or poverty from his heart. He is not talking about any material poverty here.
