There are several challenges that democracy and democratic governance faces across the globe. But, it would be best if we examine them from the Indian perspective.
In our country, corruption has become a way of life. This deep-rooted malaise needs to be examined thoroughly and surgically removed from the core. The biggest source of corruption is political funding and this has to be more transparent. The other source is bribery as personal greed has crossed all limits; we ought to have more checks and balances in place to stop this.
Booth capturing, other forms of election malpractices, crime and use of unacceptable language from public fora must be checked and reforms brought in to improve our political way of life.
The political leaders must work in a more sincere way for the masses, after they are elected, as this is still not the case in many states. Just like the proceedings of the two houses of parliament are shown live on television, so should the proceedings of state assemblies be telecast live. In fact, more transparency should be introduced in every walk of life.
