Agriculture is the science that mainly deals with different processes or  methods used to grow different varieties of crops and propagate or cultivate them based on  human needs.  When plants of the same species are grown on a large scale, they are called crops.

Explanation

About 70% of India's population is engaged in agriculture. Therefore, crop production and management  is an important aspect to ensure optimal yields in the field.

  1. Preparation of Soil
  2. Sowing of Seeds
  3. Addition of Manure and Fertilizers
  4. Irrigation
  5. Protection from Weeds
  6. Harvesting
  7. Storage

Preparation of Soil

The soil is tilled and tilted before sowing. Plows are used for this purpose. If the soil contains many large pieces, they will be broken down with the help of a hoe. This process aerates the soil so that the roots can breathe easily.

Sowing of Seeds

Seeds of good quality and free from disease are collected and sown on  prepared soil. Seeds should be sown at an appropriate depth and distance.

  • Traditional techniques
  • Broadcasting
  • Dibbling
  • Drilling
  • Seed dropping behind the plough
  • Transplanting
  • Hill dropping
  • Check row planting

Addition Of Manures And Fertilizers

The soil may not have the proper nutrients to effectively support plant growth. Thus, manure and fertilizers are added to the soil to increase  fertility and help plants grow better. Manure is prepared  using rotting plant and animal carcasses in composting pits.

Irrigation

Plants need regular watering for good growth. The supply of water to  plants is called irrigation. Wells, rivers, lakes, pipe wells are different sources of irrigation. Traditional farming methods  involve the use of people and animals.

Protection from Weeds

Unwanted plants that grow  with  crops are called weeds. This weed feeds on the nutrients supplied to the plants and thus reduces the amount of nutrients supplied to the plants, thereby inhibiting their growth.

Harvesting

When the crop matures, it is cut for further processing. This process is known as harvesting.

  • Threshing- Separation of grains from the harvested crops is called threshing. It is done either mechanically or by cattle.
  • Winnowing- The separation of grains and chaff is called winnowing. It is done either mechanically or manually.

Storage

Grains must be stored properly  if they are to be kept for a longer period of time. They must be protected from pests and moisture. Fresh seeds after harvesting need to be dried before storing. This prevents the attack of microorganisms and parasites.
