Cu does not dissolve in HCl but dissolves in nitric acid. Explain why?

Nitric acid reacts with copper because of the nitrate ion. It is the nitrate ion that causes the copper to dissolve, notthe H . There is no reaction betweencopper and HCl because neither H nor Cl is able to react with the metal
