Culture played a vital role in creating the idea of nation, art and poetry, stories and music helped to express and arouse Nation feelings. Romantic artists and poet had put on their efforts to create a sense of shared collective heritage.
Culture played the following role in creating the idea of nation :
a) A cultural movement which sought to develop a particular form of nationalist sentiment. Romantic artists and poets generally criticised the glorification of reason and science and focussed instead on emotion, intuition and mystical feelings. Their effort was to create a sense of shared collective heritage, a common cultural past as the basis of nation.
b) It was through fol songs, folk poetry and folk dances that the true spirit of nation (Volkgeist) was popularized. A German philosoper, Johann Gotfried Herder stated that true German culture was to be discovered among common
people ( Das Volk).
c) Karol Kurpinski celebrated the national struggle through his operas and music,turning folk dances like Polonaise and Mazurka into nationalist symbols.
d) French Painter Delacroix depicted an incident through his painting, in which 20000 Greeks were assumed to have been killed by The Turks. This was to arouse sympathy in the favour of Greeks for Greek War of Struggle in the viewer.
