yes cumene is better because oxidation of cumene with dilute acid give phenol and acetone as a by product which is also a commercial product used as a chemical . That is why most of  the world wide production of phenol is from cumene.

Cumene is better starting material for the preparation of phenol:

  • Cumene, which is probably known as isopropylbenzene, is an aromatic hydrocarbon. It is also a crude oil which has no color. Its formula is C_9H_1_2 and its name is Propan-2-yl-Benzene.
  • It is also called as Cumol and also as 1-methylethylBenzene. Its molecular weight is 120 grams.
  • When cumene is placed in the air, the oxygen molecules gets decomposed in it and it gets oxidized.
  • The oxidized compound is known as cumenehydroperoxide. This cumenehydroperoxide when reacted with dilute acid, it produces two byproducts, Phenol and Acetone in huge amounts of solutions.
  • Therefore cumene acts as a better starting compound for the production of Phenol.
