Cumene is better starting material for the preparation of phenol:
- Cumene, which is probably known as isopropylbenzene, is an aromatic hydrocarbon. It is also a crude oil which has no color. Its formula is and its name is Propan-2-yl-Benzene.
- It is also called as Cumol and also as 1-methylethylBenzene. Its molecular weight is 120 grams.
- When cumene is placed in the air, the oxygen molecules gets decomposed in it and it gets oxidized.
- The oxidized compound is known as cumenehydroperoxide. This cumenehydroperoxide when reacted with dilute acid, it produces two byproducts, Phenol and Acetone in huge amounts of solutions.
- Therefore cumene acts as a better starting compound for the production of Phenol.
