CuO loses O atom and so is "reduced".

H2 gains O atom and so is "oxidized".
Alternatively, Oxidation state of Cu changes from +2 to 0 and due to gain of electrons CuO is reduced. And Oxidation state of H changes from 0 to +1 and due to loss of electrons H2 is oxidized.
