Lord Curzon, the then viceroy of India decided for the partition of Bengal and reasoned it that the big size of Bengal was a hurdle in the administration system.

Although the Britishers gave the reason of effective administrative system for the partition of Bengal but in the eyes of Indian revolutionaries the real reason for the partition of Bengal was the policy of British to divide and rule.

Through the partition of Bengal the Britishers wanted to divide the Hindus and Muslims and to create differences among them so that the Britishers can effectively take charge over the Indian subcontinent.

After the announcement in July 1905 the partition finally completed on 16th October 1905.

Bengal was now divided into two provinces one with the majority of Hindus in it and the other with Muslims as the majority.
