The Lord Curzon, the viceroy of India divided Bengal in order to break Hindu-Muslim unity and thus suppress the nationalist movement in Bengal.

He partitioned Bengal on 16th October 1905 between the Muslim dominated region and Hindu dominated region. He provided an excuse that it is very difficult to run such a huge state but the real aim was to break the Hindu-Muslim unity which was the backbone of Indian national Movement.
